Requiem concert chamber choir Ad Parnassum
During the Requiem Concert on Sunday, November 2nd, chamber choir Ad Parnassum, conducted by Anthony Zielhorst, will perform a work by Sporck, "Distance."
This special concert will take place at Koningshoeven Abbey, Eindhovenseweg 3 in Berkel-Enschot/Tilburg, and begins at 3:00 PM.
For this edition of Requiem in Koningshoeven, composer Jo Sporck wrote Distance, a spatial work for double choir, two soloists, and zinc instruments. The piece seeks solace in a time of ecological and geopolitical crises and combines texts from Russian and Ukrainian newspapers (from the day of the invasion) with texts by Seneca. These are mostly short fragments - musically translated into short signals - that deal with solace, power, and loss, but ultimately also with peace.
Jo Sporck has frequently visited Russia and Ukraine, and his work has been performed extensively there.
Additionally, a work by Matijs de Roos is on the programme. Commissioned by the 2025 Gregorian Festival, Matijs de Roo wrote the work Lux, inspired by the theme of "sacred places." The challenging richness of this work calls for new performances, and therefore we are including it in this edition of Requiem in Koningshoeven.
Hugo Distler's Totentanz (1934) will also be performed, a piece in which 14 short German motets alternate with spoken dialogues between Death and everyday people. The dialogues are given a contemporary interpretation that fits Distance and reinforces its theme. Tilburg's city poet, Frederike Luijten, has written texts for this piece.
The three modern works are supplemented by a lament by Renaissance composer Adriaan Willaert.
